Don't Let the High Cost of Gas Ruin Your Summer Vacation

Gas prices are rising faster then the temperatures this summer. It's a sure bet that there will be more people complaining about high fuel prices than hot weather. It is a rite of summer for most families to pack up the family vehicle and head out on the road for a week or two of visiting relatives, seeing new places or just getting away from home for awhile. But with the rising cost of gas and diesel the annual summer vacation is in serious jeopardy of nor happening or becoming nothing more than a "lets camp out and pretend were in a national forest when we all know were really just in out backyard".

You can still have your cake and eat it to. There are two options when it comes to saving this years family vacation. You can cut back on the costs of other things which will allow you more money for gas. Your second option is to find ways to use less fuel. For most combining both cost saving measures will yield the greatest results.

Since most people don't want to cut back on all the fun experiences a family vacation can provide look for ways to save on gas and squeeze every last mile that you can out of every gallon of gas.

We have all heard this before but here it is again. Before you head out this summer make sure you vehicle is ready for the road. Here is what to look for.

1. Get your vehicle tuned up. A dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 10%.

2.Check your tires once a month. Tires that are not properly inflated can cost you about 5% in fuel efficiency. If you are not sure what is the correct tire pressure for your vehicle ask the person who sold you the tires or look on the inside of the door panel to find the correct number.

3. Just because speed limits have increased doesn't mean you have to. It is a fact that for most vehicles going 60 MPH is the best speed for fuel efficiency. It's safer and unless you have a important deadline arriving a few minutes sooner does not justify the added speed.

4. Use regular unleaded gasoline unless your owners manual calls for premium fuel. Premium fuel does not boost fuel economy and can cost as much as .40 cents more per gallon.

5. Lighten the load. The more things you pile into you vehicle the poorer your fuel economy. Plan and pack carefully. An extra 500 pound load on your vehicle will reduce the fuel economy by about 4%.

6. A new trend that has sprung up with the sky rocketing gas prices is the offering of incentives by tourist related business's such as hotels. Check around. Some will offer gas gift cards as a way to get you to stay at there hotel.

There is no reason to let the high cost of gas ruin your summer vacation. Use the tips listed above to save you money this summer and give you a summer vacation to remember.
